Necesitamos su ayuda

Como muchos de ustedes saben, mi cuñado, Jaime Lafita, padece ELA desde hace ocho años. La esperanza de vida oscila entre los tres y cinco años, si bien muchos pacientes no pasan de un año.

En el mundo de la investigación se utiliza el término «valle de la muerte» para los proyectos que mueren antes de llegar a las farmacias y ser útiles para los pacientes. Esto puede suceder debido a obstáculos burocráticos y administrativos, permisos o falta de financiación, entre otras razones.

Jaime escuchó el término valle de la muerte hablando con investigadores, e inmediatamente pensó en el verdadero Valle de la Muerte, en California. Siendo el gran deportista y ciclista que siempre ha sido, se dijo a sí mismo: «Voy a cruzar el valle de la muerte en bicicleta para llamar la atención sobre la enfermedad y hacer ver a los investigadores y al público que la ELA se puede superar».

Jaime apenas puede caminar o hablar. Sin embargo, con ayuda para subirse a una bicicleta tándem, todavía puede pedalear, aunque es muy importante tener a alguien a su lado cuando la bicicleta se para, porque si no se caería.

Dicho esto, sin tiempo que perder, en un par de semanas se va a California con un equipo de apoyo que incluye a su mujer, Lourdes, a su hijo Álvaro y a algunos amigos cercanos, entre ellos un médico y un fisioterapeuta. Va a pedalear 650 kilómetros, cruzando el Valle de la Muerte.

El proyecto ya está en las portadas de los periódicos, emisoras de radio y pantallas de televisión en España, y esperamos que también tenga mucho eco en Estados Unidos.

Por lo tanto les agradecería mucho si pudieran ayudar, aunque sea contribuyendo con lo que cuesta una cerveza. Pero especialmente si pudieran difundir este mensaje entre su círculo de amistades. Necesitamos que este desafío se convierta en una bola de nieve. Los pacientes de ELA necesitan de esta cobertura mediática para que los políticos y los laboratorios se pongan con la tarea de encontrar una cura definitiva, o al menos aliviar esta terrible enfermedad.

As many of you know my brother-in-law, Jaime Lafita, has been suffering from ALS for eight years. Life expectancy usually ranges from three to five years, although many patients do not live beyond one year. 

In the world of research, the term “valley of death” is used for projects that die before reaching the pharmacies and becoming useful to patients. This can happen due to bureaucratic and administrative obstacles, permits, lack of funding, or other reasons.

When Jaime first heard about this valley of death while talking to investigators, he immediately thought of the real Death Valley in California. Being the great athlete and cyclist he has always been, he said to himself: “I am going to cross the valley of death on a bike to draw attention and show researchers and the public that ALS can be overcome”. 

Jaime can barely walk or speak. However, with assistance to get onto a tandem bike, he can still pedal, although it’s important to have someone beside him when the bike stops, or he could fall. 

That said, with no time to waste, in a couple of weeks he is going to California with a support team, which includes his wife, Lourdes, his son Álvaro, and a few close friends, including a doctor and a physiotherapist. He will pedal 650 kilometers, crossing the Death Valley. 

The project is already on the front pages of the newspapers, radio networks and TV screens in Spain, and we hope it will also gain significant attention in the USA. 

So, I would greatly appreciate it if you could help, even by contributing the cost of a beer. But especially if you could spread this message among your circle of friends. We really need this challenge to snowball. ALS patients need this media coverage so that politicians and laboratories will prioritize finding a definitive cure or at least alleviate this terrible disease.
